During the holidays, it doesn’t come as a surprise that year after year, gym goers progress in the gym becomes stagnant or even worse, revert backwards. This holiday season, let’s try to get ahead of the curve by understanding how we get out of rhythm and some ways we can make sure to stay on track.
First and foremost, the holiday that comes up first during this season is Thanksgiving, a day completely revolving around a giant feast. With that, we also sit around watching football, socializing with family, and snacking on all the delicious treats. Maybe, this year, we get ahead of the feast. I fully believe in enjoying the holidays with friends and family, but getting a quick workout in early that day is a great way to make sure that you set the tone for your day, have a healthy mindset going into the biggest binge day of the year, and burn off a few extra calories before enjoying yourself. Maybe that means going to the gym or get involved in the community with your local Turkey Trot 5k (even the one with your NoCo Fitness Fam if you’re interested!). This can be a great way to limit the damage of the day.
Now, it doesn’t stop there. Next up, we have what I call baking season, the short time between Thanksgiving and Christmas, where everyone bakes and makes those old recipes from your childhood that are delicious. If you love to bake, maybe this year, try making the goodies, enjoy one or two, and give the rest away. Not only will your progress in the gym thank you, so will all the people that get to enjoy your food! On Christmas day itself, we should try to follow some of the same tips as Thanksgiving. Try to get a workout in early, and then enjoy the rest of your day!
The holiday season doesn’t have to derail your progress! Going into it with a healthy mindset and a determination to finish the year strong can make all the difference!
