We all know there are many different types of dieting out there. Some that work and many that do not. I am going to talk about one dieting strategy that works great for me and might also work for you. The diet I am going to talk about is Intermittent Fasting. There are a few different ways to intermittent fast but I will be talking about how I did it and the reasons I think it is the healthiest and most effective.
Intermittent fasting is basically not eating for a certain amount of time and then having a window of time to eat. For example my typical day would look like this; I would wake up about eight o’clock, go to class till ten o’clock, workout from ten till about eleven, and then I would go home to eat. My last meal would be around nine at night. During my day I wouldn’t eat for about fourteen hours. When I did eat, I ate all the calories I needed for my goals though. Throughout the whole day I made sure to drink ample amounts of water!
When intermittent fasting the fasting state is twelve to eighteen hours. This allows the body to deplete through the stored glycogen and start using fat storage as energy. The reason I would workout right before I broke my fast was so that I could workout on an empty tank. Working out on an empty tank, although it might sound terrible, was pretty awesome. Because I didn’t have much glycogen (carbs) left my body went to its fat storage. Also when fasting then exercising the Human Growth Hormone (HGH) spikes naturally. Biomechanically it allows the brain to focus more, plus I had more energy for my workout. Then eating within ninety minutes of working out allows the nutrients the body needs to recover and get my energy back.
The best way to start intermittent fasting is to progressively start. Just like in the gym you wouldn’t go and do ten pull-ups. You would slowly start by doing one perfect pull-up then increase from there. If you are use to eating right when you get up at eight o’clock, wait till eight-thirty. Then the next day wait till nine, then nine-thirty, and so on. Just because you are fasting does not mean its okay to eat crap though. You still should be eating plenty of protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats.
Intermittent fasting is a great way either to lose body fat and just look shredded. But consistency is key here. Just like with any other diet and workout routine you have to be consistent with it. That being said cheat days are fine. Everybody has cheat days but it depends on what you do often. Just like if you workout and eat healthy once a week nothing is going to happen. So if you only mess up once a week or two weeks it will be okay. But keep in mind the goal is to make this a lifestyle. Not just another fad that fades away in a couple of months.
