It’s getting colder outside. For most of us, that means that an entire mode of exercise is out for the winter. This means no more hiking, running, or outdoor sports! But hold on, that doesn’t mean that you should just sit around all winter long waiting for the new year to do something about it. This is an opportunity to try out some new forms of exercise that you might like!
For starters, you might want to check out local gyms to see if they have the right equipment and the right atmosphere for you. A great, and often overlooked form of exercise, is going for a walk on the treadmill. The incline is adjustable and it is fairly easy to simulate a hiking path. One of the largest criticisms that I often hear about the treadmill is that it is boring. The treadmill offers a shelf on the display that can be used for reading while you walk! Or if you’re like me, you might use it to prop your phone up to watch YouTube!
Another great way to get the heart rate up is to get on a rowing machine! This is a great machine for balancing power and aerobic activity. To incorporate more of a power workout, you just pull harder on the handlebar and for more of an aerobic workout, you cut back on the intensity and go for distance. There might even be challenges amongst gym patrons and trainers for time trials to make it more interesting! I know we do at NoCo!
Finally, to get that heart rate up, you might want to look into some high intensity interval training (HIIT). This is a very popular form of training because it varies so much. You can do hit training for a week and never do the same exercise twice. This is a very challenging form of exercise so there are plenty of modifications to exercise if you are just starting out. I highly recommend getting a trainer if you want to pursue this because learning how to do the exercises properly while not burning yourself out will be key in getting you the results that you want!
Don’t let the cold weather get you down this winter! There are plenty of other options to stay fit and although it might cost you a gym membership, it might be worth looking into some other forms of exercise! You might even reach some fitness goals before the new year is even hear!
